German Plant Protection Conference 2023

Somewhat belatedly, we would like to inform that our team participated in the 63rd German Plant Protection Conference, held at Göttingen University from September 26th to September 29th, 2023. During the conference, we had the opportunity to present and discuss our ongoing research through 13 contributions and co-authoring several more. Additionally, we had the pleasure of establishing new contacts during the social evening, while enjoying a few refreshing beverages. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our dedicated Ph.D. student, Jana Uthoff, for winning a well-deserved poster prize. Furthermore, we would like to extend our congratulations to Linda Muskat for being awarded the prestigious Young Talent prize by the German Phytomedical Society, in recognition of her outstanding dissertation on the “Development of Attract and Kill Formulations for Biological Psyllid Pest Control.”

5th European Conference on Metal-Organic Frameworks and Porous Polymers – EUROMOF2023

Our working group members Celina Beermann and Tessa Strümpfler attended the Euromof held in Granada, Spain on 24. – 27.09.2023. Over 600 people from science and industry attended the conference.

They both presented their recently used methods for the encapsulation of different substances via co-extrusion techniques. There were a lot of new ideas and interesting posters and talks to discover because of the wide-ranging topics that were presented. The main topics of the conference were synthesis, physical properties, gas adsorption and storage on porous materials, and their environmental applications.

Congratulations to Xenia

Xenia Steurer was awarded for one of the 3 best oral presentations that were given during 7ISEBE – The Seventh International Symposium on Environmental Biotechnology and Engineering, held from 22. – 26.05.2023 in Marseille, France. The conference focused on the cutting-edge research advances in the field of environmental protection, biorefinery, renewable energy production and development of technical solutions that can be implemented on a global scale.

ProcessNet in Aachen

Our PhD students Jnanada, Jan and Vanessa attended with two talks and five posters the ProcessNet and 33. DECHEMA annual conference in Aachen. They presented their latest results on production of antimicrobials with cell cultures and endophytes, chemo-enzymatic one-pot synthesis, biohydrogen production with green microalgae entrapped in novel silica hydrogels and microencapsulation of tumor cells as well as the future project on co-cultivation of microalgae and bacteria. They also met experts from the field of chemistry, biotechnology and engineering throughout Europe and had a great time in Aachen.

Insights in the work of a moderator

Last Thursday Sissy-Christin Lorenz who has been nurturing an interest in science communication got the chance to try out moderating a panel discussion within the event “Looking through the magnifying glass 2018: Japan”. Main topics were economics in Japan and an upcoming cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld and the city Yokohama for an easier exchange of interested students.

Participants of the panel discussion: Sissy-Christin Lorenz, Thomas Herold, Prof. Dr. Lothar Budde, Herbert Vogel, Takeshi Tamai with Enno Calsin Borda as translator and Uwe Kreidel (from left to right)

Even though it was not her Ph D topic, Sissy managed to perform confidently and was well prepared throughout the whole event. Anant who was invited as a “semi-Japan expert” marvelled at how effortlessly she kept the discussion running.
